Sonangol Urged to Position itself as an Integrated Energy Company

Africa-Press – Angola. The Secretary of State for Oil and Gas, Jose Barroso, on Wednesday urged the state oil company Sonangol to undergo a strategic transformation and position itself as an integrated energy company, rather than remaining a traditional oil company.

Speaking at a press conference commemorating the 50th anniversary of the national oil company, Barroso pointed to the need to strengthen national refining capacity, reduce dependence on imports, and protect the national economy.

Barroso spoke of the need to prioritize industrialization and the local processing of energy products in structuring projects, as well as the strengthening of supply chains. He highlighted the expansion of the refining chain and emphasized the development of refineries in Cabinda, Lobito, Soyo, and future petrochemical hubs.

Barroso mentioned the construction of storage parks for liquid and gaseous petroleum products throughout the country and cited the Barra do Dande Ocean Terminal (TOBD) as an example.

He emphasized the importance of valuing the natural gas chain for diversifying the national energy matrix and as a driver of industrialization and economic development.

The official urged Sonangol to continue investing in renewable energy, such as solar and green hydrogen, in line with national interests. He emphasized the important role of the company’s Research and Development Center in studying minerals critical to the energy transition.

He recognized the importance of reforms oriented toward efficiency, accountability, and transparency, supported by solid governance mechanisms and an organizational culture oriented toward results.
