Africa-Press – Angola. The minister of Transport, Ricardo de Abreu, revealed on Thursday (09), that the construction of the new Cabinda International Airport, which began in May 2023, could be completed in 2027.

In statements to the press, at the end of a visit to the project, he said he had received assurances from the contractor that everything is being done to ensure the work is delivered on schedule.

Ricardo de Abreu announced that, in the coming days, a monitoring team will be created to implement the airport’s operational preparation methodology after construction, called “ORAT,” so that, as soon as the work is completed and duly certified, the infrastructure will become operational.

He mentioned that the process requires some pilot tests to be carried out during this time, similar to what happened at the Dr. António Agostinho Neto International Airport in the province of Icolo & Bengo.

“We will still work with the contractor on the schedule for the definitive and technological systems, signaling, beaconing, air traffic control for navigation, in short, a set of systems necessary to carry out experimental flights,” he emphasized.

The minister of Transport said that the project has a physical and financial completion rate of around 30%, with most of the more complex work being carried out, including the runway.

The Governor of Cabinda, Suzana de Abreu, expressed satisfaction with the progress of the works, which employ more than 600 young people.

She stressed that the infrastructure could add value, especially in transportation and logistics, contributing significantly to the development of the region.

The new Cabinda International Airport will have the capacity to handle a flow of approximately 700 domestic passengers and 500 international passengers during peak hours.

It will have the capacity to receive 670,722 passengers annualy, through 12,635 aircraft movements.

The infrastructure is being built in the commune of Malembo, municipality of Tando-Zinze, 35 kilometers north of the city of Cabinda.

The project is located in an area of 860 hectares.

It will have a runway 3,500 meters long and 45 meters wide, a passenger terminal with an area of 12,000 square meters, a control tower, a fire station, among other facilities.
