Africa-Press – Angola. The Prefect of the Dicastery for Education and Culture, José Tolentino de Mendonça, said this Thursday (09), in that holy city, that education is the main axis of cooperation between Angola and the Vatican.
Speaking to the press during Pope Leo XIV’s apostolic visit to Angola, the Cardinal highlighted that the long relationship between the two states finds a point of convergence in education, evidenced by the significant number of Catholic educational institutions spreaded throughout Angolan territory.
The official stressed that these institutions provide a relevant public service, especially the Catholic University of Angola, which stands out as a project of excellence in the training of professionals in several fields of knowledge.
According to the prelate, about 40% of Catholic schools are located on the African continent, a fact that reinforces the importance of education in a space marked by the youth of its population and the need to expand teaching and training structures.
Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça considered that the educational process should go beyond the technical transmission of knowledge, so that it should integrate fundamental values of life, with a view to forming citizens capable of taking the lead in their own development and actively contributing to society.
He mentioned that the Catholic Church maintains a close relationship with communities and has promoted inclusive education that values diversity and welcomes different cultural expressions.
The cardinal also highlighted the role of the family as the primary educational agent, as well as the importance of coordination with state institutions, as pillars of national cohesion, so that an open and constructive dialogue towards the promotion of the common good is essential.
