UNITA Expresses Solidarity with Victims of Benguela Floods

Africa-Press – Angola. The main opposition party, UNITA, on Tuesday in the centre-south Benguela Province expressed its solidarity with the victims of the floods in Benguela Municipality caused by the overflowing of Cavaco River.

In statements on the sidelines of his visit to the site, the first provincial secretary of the largest opposition party in Benguela, Juca Manjenje, stated that the objective was to talk to the population, as well as with the local authorities.

“After seeing the situation firsthand and talking to the people, we will sit down and assess our capacity to help, so that we can intervene with some clothing and food”, he explained.

Regarding the breach of the dike, whose waters are affecting several neighborhoods in that region, Juca Manjenje advocated for urgent intervention in the Cubal, Coporolo, and Cavaco rivers.

“We were informed that the rains continue to fall in the interior, especially since we are still in April. Some citizens who wanted to return to their neighborhoods may be affected again by the floodwaters”, he said.

In his opinion, there has to be advance policies to prevent such situation.

Provisional data indicate eight deaths and about 10,000 people displaced by the flooding.

On the other hand, the victims complain about the presence of people infiltrated among them with the intention of benefiting from the community meals and also stealing tents.
