Domestic Meat Dominates Supermarket Shelves in Huíla

Africa-Press – Angola. Huíla is consolidating itself as a national model for the production of animal protein, especially beef, goat, and pork, with an exclusive presence on the shelves of local butchers and supermarkets.

In a survey conducted in markets in Lubango City (southern Huila Province), it was observed that only chicken still persists as an imported meat type; everything else is a domestic product, a sector whose prices range from 1,500 to 7,000 kwanzas per kilogram.

The preference is concentrated on the growing value of domestic meat in supermarkets and butchers, although significant activity is still noted in informal markets.

Huíla’s beef production reached 1,027,200 kilograms in 2025, meeting 22 percent of the local market’s current needs, set at 4,525,724 kg/year. Statistics from the provincial government reveal this.

The amount of meat produced represents 6,848 (+731) head of cattle slaughtered and, compared to 2024, when 20.2% of local needs were produced, there is an increase of 109,650 kilograms.

This production, according to data from the provincial Agriculture and Fisheries office, is driven by the growth of beef cattle farming, pig farming, and poultry farming in municipalities such as Gambos, Cacula, Quipungo, Lubango, Caconda, Quilengues, Caluquembe, and Jamba Mineira, which help consolidate Huíla as a powerhouse.

The merchant Maura Cortereal, from the butcher shop in the Lubango market, pointed out that she hasn’t sold imported meat for over 10 years; all of it is local and acquired from producers in the province.

She stated that the acquisition cost drives the preference, because a live ox costs between 270,000 and 450,000 kwanzas, which allows her to sell the kg for between four and seven thousand kwanzas. The breeder Sérgio Magno, from Chibia, acknowledges the growth in the sector, but complains about the measures imposed on credit disbursements, which “are very restrictive” and with immediate interest on the borrowed capital.

For him, food production requires not only the will of the producers, of which there is plenty, but also financing. Chicken producer Euclides Gideão pointed out that the cost of domestic chicken is still higher than imported chicken, at around four thousand kwanzas per kg, while imported chicken costs one thousand and four hundred.
