Africa-Press – Angola. One hundred obsolete firearms, collected by the National Police in illegal possession of the population, since 2017, were destroyed this Thursday, in the city of Dundo, province of Lunda Norte, during a public event.

At the time, Silva Cacoma, the regional head of weapons and ammunition destruction of the Mines Consultative Group (MAG), underlined that of the 100 weapons, 71 are of the AKM type, 25 UZI, three PKM and one RPK, of different calibers.

He said that the process of disarming the civilian population is an essential condition for consolidating peace and democracy in the country, in addition to helping alleviate the citizens’ feelings of insecurity.

For this reason, he continued, the process will continue, hence there is a plan for mobilization and continuous awareness of the civilian population for the voluntary surrender of weapons in their possession.

On the other hand, he announced, in the near future, that gunsmiths will be in police units to store weapons and ammunition collected and in good condition, for conservation.

MAG exists in the country since 1994, and is an international Non-Governmental Organization, created in the United States of America, with a focus on humanitarian mine action activities, especially mine clearance, technical research and education on mine risk.

It also acts in physical security and management of stocks of arms and ammunition.
