Africa-Press – Angola. The Political Bureau of the ruling MPLA has appointed Adão de Almeida as Speaker of the National Assembly, succeeding Carolina Cerqueira, who has held the position since 2022.

According to the final communiqué of the extraordinary meeting held on Thursday under the guidance of MPLA President João Lourenço, the proposal will be forwarded to parliament for the subsequent election of the new Speaker as established by the rules of procedure of the National Assembly.

According to the law, the Speaker of the National Assembly is elected by the legislature. They can be replaced during the legislature at the initiative of the political party or coalition of parties that elected them.

The Speaker may resign from office by submitting a written resignation to the Standing Committee. The resignation will take effect upon submission.

About Adão da Almeida

Adão de Almeida holds a Master’s degree in Law from the Faculty of Law at Agostinho Neto University (UAN), in partnership with the Faculty of Law at the University of Lisbon. He also holds a Law degree from UAN.

He was a professor of Constitutional Law at Lusíada University in Angola and a trainer at the National Institute of Judicial Studies.

Throughout his career, he has held various ministerial roles, including Minister of State and Chief of Staff to the President of the Republic (2020 to present), Minister of Territorial Administration and State Reform (2017–2020), Secretary of State for Territorial Administration and Institutional Affairs (2012–2017), and Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration and Institutional and Electoral Affairs (2010–2012).

He has also been a member of the Technical Committee of the Constitutional Committee of the National Assembly, the Justice and Law Reform Committee, the National Electoral Committee, and the Technical Committee that drafted the electoral legislative package.

He is currently a member of the Political Bureau of the MPLA and an Assistant Professor at Agostinho Neto University’s Faculty of Law.
