Africa-Press – Angola. The Minister of Youth and Sports, Palmira Barbosa, said Wednesday, in Luanda, that adapted sport has raised the name of Angola in the world, due to the results in international competitions.

For her, the achievements of athletics, as well as the fact that football for amputees has won the World Cup and has been twice runner-up demonstrates that.

Palmira Barbosa, who was involved in a sports activity at the Coqueiros stadium, which was attended by the Director of Diversity and Inclusion of the US Department of State, Gina Abercombie-Winstanley, said that Paralympic athletes are a true force and also a school of life.

The former captain of the National Handball Team praised the US State Department’s initiative to interact and make contact with adapted sports in the country.

“Gestures like the ones we are witnessing today become a motivational way for the Paralympic Committee to overcome the challenges it faces”, he stressed.

For her part, Gina Abercombie-Winstanley was mobilized with the stories of overcoming athletes that she heard and saw, always accompanied by success.

He noted that diplomacy leverages the passion shared by athletes to encourage inclusion in diverse communities around the world, adding that his department strives to promote diversity, quality, inclusion and accessibility.

He reported that such programs also further the United States’ commitment to empower women and girls, build resilience against extremist influences, and develop leadership skills.

“Our sports diplomacy programs include a variety of sports such as basketball, skateboarding, football and martial arts and sports for the disabled in more than one hundred countries”, he emphasized.

Abercombie-Winstanley stated that the Government of the United States of America looks forward to continuing to collaborate with the Government of Angola as catalysts for change.

In the final part of his intervention, he congratulated the football team for amputees for winning second place in the World Cup, in 2022, in Turkey, as well as the athletes who performed in the same modality match, athletics race and traction tricycle manual.

Also participating in the act were the US Ambassador to Angola, Tulinabo Mushingi, the president of the Angolan Paralympic Committee (CPA), Leonel da Rocha, and officials from the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
