The African Union Commissioner for the Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy and Sustainable Environment, Angolan Josefa Sacko, guaranteed, Thursday (14), in Addis Ababa, that the continent’s youth is at the center of the development agenda. of the organization, especially as it is the youngest population in the world, with around 420 million people aged between 15 and 35 years.

Josefa Sacko spoke about this, when she was proceeding with the official launch, by videoconference, of the investment guidelines for young people in the agri-food system in Africa, during the 32nd Session of the FAO Regional Conference for Africa, which the city of Malabo, capital of Equatorial Guinea, welcomes, and assured that “it is this young population that will lead the future of the continent, and investing in youth is fundamental for the development of Africa”. an important role in agri-food systems, whether as producers, processors, food traders, as workers, innovators and entrepreneurs, and as political actors.

Despite concerted efforts by the African Union and Member States to facilitate the preferential entry and participation of women and youth in lucrative and attractive agribusiness opportunities, through means such as the “One Million by 2021 Initiative” and the “Declaration of Malabo 2014”, women and youth are still under-represented in most activities down the agribusiness value chain and therefore remain vulnerable. “Young people in Africa face huge and multidimensional challenges, such as lack of employment opportunities, limited skills and training, access to information, land, finance and markets, especially in rural areas”, underlined Commissioner Josefa Sacko.
