Africa-Press – Angola. Moussa Faki Mahamat considered, in Luanda, the holding of the extraordinary summit on “Terrorism and Unconstitutional Changes of Governments in Africa”, taking place on the 28th of this month, in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, proposed by President João Lourenço, a sovereign opportunity for the Chiefs of State to find concrete solutions to staunch the problem, which tends to spread throughout the continent.
In the country since this Wednesday, he made this statement after leaving the audience with the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, at the Presidential Palace, in Cidade Alta. Heading the African Union Commission for another four-year term, Moussa Faki Mahamat said that the Angolan statesman’s proposal is interesting and timely, given the way in which the problem is gaining ground across the African continent.
“Terrorism and Unconstitutional Changes in Governments in Africa is a current and very worrying issue. Just to give you an idea, just yesterday (Tuesday), our forces in Somalia were attacked and there were many human losses”, he stressed.
He said that terrorism is not a problem characteristic of Africa, but in recent years, the continent has become the bastion of the problem. The chairman of the African Union Commission said that he has already requested help from other countries and continents to tackle the problem, but has not yet received a response.
“For this reason, Angola’s idea of sitting down and thinking about how to eradicate this problem from the continent is providential”, he stressed. He pointed out that terrorism started in North Africa, but today it is conquering other places, especially in the Sahel area, Horn of Africa and in the Chad Basin.
“The phenomenon is expanding across the continent, which is why it would not, in fact, be such an important moment if Angola did not take the initiative, but, having taken the initiative, it will be an opportunity that will help African leaders feel, dialogue and find solutions to overcome this problem, which is now affecting practically the entire continent”, he highlighted.
Moussa Faki Mahamat stressed that allied to this problem are the unconstitutional changes that are now recurring. “Because we are experiencing this problem in Africa, it would never be too much for the Heads of State to sit down to solve the problem”, he stressed. The chairman of the African Union Commission stressed that the visit to Angola was precisely aimed at discussing with the President of the Republic matters related to the organization of the summit.
Angola’s intention to hold this extraordinary summit on “Terrorism and Unconstitutional Changes in Governments in Africa” was presented to African statesmen by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, on behalf of President João Lourenço, during the 35th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Chiefs. of State and Government of the African Union, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
On the occasion, Angola expressed concern about the growing cases of unconstitutional regime changes in Africa, using military force and defended, as a way out, firmer measures to discourage such actions, as well as the accountability of the actors.
During his speech at the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, in New York, United States, President João Lourenço had expressed concern about the change in the constitutional order, using military force, registered in some African countries.
He regretted, on the occasion, the fact that these acts did not deserve an adequate and sufficiently vigorous reaction from the international community, in the sense of discouraging such practices, which he considered, in all titles, “reproachable”.
The Head of State defended, before that tribune, a more tenacious action by the international community and not just pronouncing condemnation statements, in order to force the actors to restore power to Organs legitimately established bodies. “We cannot continue to allow recent examples such as those of Guinea and others to thrive in Africa and on other continents”, he stressed at the time.
Another Audience

At the end of the meeting, Simeon Esono Angue said that the occasion served to invite the Head of State to also attend the other African Union summit on the humanitarian situation in Africa.
