Africa-Press – Angola. Seventy-three thousand hectares of land are reserved for the cultivation of rice, wheat and corn, as part of the implementation of the National Plan for the Promotion of Grain Production (Planagrão).

The implementation of this Government program was analyzed at the first ordinary session of the Alto Zambeze Administration Council, led by the municipal administrator, Esmael Keshipoco, according to a note released this Saturday.

The Government of Angola has launched the Wheat, Rice, Soybean and Corn Development Plan, called Planagrão, which expects to produce, from 2027, six million tonnes of these cereals per year, against the current figure of around 3.14 million tons of grain.

In the province of Moxico, 452 thousand hectares, distributed in five municipalities, have already been identified for the implementation of the project.

In these areas, grains such as wheat, rice, soybeans and corn will be produced, in a short and medium term perspective (2022 to 2027).

At the moment, the process of submitting product applications is underway to ensure the implementation of the plan, which will be financed by the Angolan Development Bank.

The Planagrão involves promoting large-scale production of wheat, rice, soy and corn, improving soil productivity and profitability, increasing agricultural entrepreneurs and employment, promoting the value chain and guaranteeing a fixed income to the producers.

The plan will initially be developed in the provinces of Moxico, Lunda Norte, Lunda Sul and Cuando Cubango, in an area of two million hectares.

During the ordinary session, the members of the municipal council also analyzed the provincial and national projects to be implemented in the municipality, in the areas of roads, water, education and health.

At the meeting, it was also decided to hold a meeting with the contractors of the works of the Integrated Plan of Intervention in Municipalities (PIIM) for the completion of the projects, which started in 2020.

Located 519 kilometers from the extreme east of the city of Luena, the municipality of Alto Zambeze is the second most populous in the province, after Moxico (provincial headquarters), inhabited by more than 100,000 people.
