Angola and Italy reinforce cooperation with new agreement

Africa-Press – Angola. Angola and Italy signed this Wednesday, in Rome, a cooperation agreement in the field of oil, involving Italy’s ENI and Angola’s Sonangol.

The Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço, and the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, witnessed the moment, preceded by a meeting between the two entities.

The memorandum of understanding aims to further expand the areas of cooperation between the two companies, through studies in agribusiness, value chain and other decarbonization sectors.

According to the terms of the memorandum, companies ENI and Sonangol will jointly identify and evaluate opportunities in the energy transition, including agro-industrial chains for the production of fuels with lower carbon emissions.

In addition, advances a statement from ENI, the two companies will assess opportunities in the agribusiness sector, with studies to promote synergies between national agricultural production chains and bioenergy.

The studies focus on special attention to seeds and improved biotechnology, mechanization, fertilizers and logistics services.

Other areas of collaboration could involve minerals for the energy transition, such as those used in battery and renewable energy production, and the innovation ecosystem.

The memorandum continues the progress achieved following the protocol signed by ENI, Sonangol and Angola’s National Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels Agency (ANPG) in October 2021.

This memorandum is in line with Sonangol’s vision of decarbonisation through investments in cleaner energy projects, and with ENI’s strategy to assume a leadership role in the decarbonisation process.

The Italian oil company’s strategy also aims to promote greater use of renewable energy sources, in accordance with the provisions of the Paris Agreement (France) on climate change and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

João Lourenço in the Italian Parliament

As part of the first state visit to Italy, President João Lourenço was in Parliament, where he met with the leader of the Senate, Ignacio La Russa.

At the other meeting, also at the “Casa das Leis” in Italy, the Angolan statesman went to the Chamber of Deputies to work with the President of Parliament, Lorenzo Fontana.

Homage to the Unknown Soldier

As part of his state visit to Italy, at the invitation of his counterpart Sergio Mattarella, President João Lourenço honored, this Wednesday, in Rome, the Unknown Soldier.

The tribute consisted of the laying of a wreath on the monument known as the “Altar of the Fatherland”, erected in recognition of Vittorio Emanuele II, the first king of Italy, sovereign who died in 1878.
