Africa-Press – Angola. Angola and Namibia recommended on Wednesday improvements in security along their shared border, with joint patrols and information sharing.

The recommendation is expressed in the press release from the bilateral meeting, held in Menongue from the 17th to the 19th of this month, which was attended by delegates from the Ministries of the Interior of the provinces of Cubango, on the Angolan side, and Rundu-Okavango East, Nkure Nkuru-Kavango West and Ohangwena, in Namibia.

According to the document, the counterparts, based on the cases of border violations, totaling 4,064, with the detention of 7,698 Namibians returning via the same route, recorded since 2023, recommended the implementation of joint patrols to prevent cross-border and related crimes.

Regarding fuel smuggling, it was recommended that operational actions be intensified, consisting of patrolling and coordinated information exchange, to prevent, discourage, and hold accountable those responsible for illicit practices along the border.

Considering the distances between land and river border posts, as well as their vulnerability, the parties also requested continued monitoring to discourage violations by border residents and others.

Regarding sexual assault and attempted assault, since 2023, Angola has recorded one case that occurred in the town of Olupale, and the Namibian side has recorded four in the border regions with Cubango.

The parties encouraged the higher authorities to continue working with their counterparts on the opening of new border posts in areas already identified with the highest migratory flow, and also acknowledged the existence of difficulties in controlling border residents due to the distances between official posts and the lack of identification documents, which facilitates crossing in unsuitable locations.

The meeting aimed to assess the degree of compliance with the resolutions of the last meeting held in the city of Rundu, where issues related to the reduction of border incidents, the improvement of operational information between joint forces, tax evasion, poaching, cattle rustling and other related cross-border crimes were addressed.
