Africa-Press – Angola. Angola’s influence in the African Union (AU) and its commitment to mediating the conflict in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) dominated the meeting held by Angola’s permanent representative to the African Union, Miguel Bembe , Tuesday, with the deputy representative of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to the continental organization, Adam Drury.
During the meeting, held at the premises of the Angolan Diplomatic Mission in Addis Ababa, the British diplomat stated that the United Kingdom follows and supports the Luanda Process, an initiative of the Angolan Head of State, João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, which aims for a peaceful resolution of the conflict involving the DRC and neighboring Rwanda.
Adam Drury made considerations about the challenges inherent in implementing the historic UN resolution 2719, of 21 December 2023, on the financing of African Union peace support operations.
Implementation of the said resolution requires that all stakeholders, including AU Member States, UN bodies, regional organizations and donor countries have a common understanding of the terms of the document.
For his part, Ambassador Miguel Bembe highlighted Angola’s actions within the scope of its current mandate on the AU Peace and Security Council (CPS), and the country’s prospects for the presidency of the continental organization in the period 2025-2026.
