Africa-Press – Angola. Angola has submitted its candidacy to host the World Junior Swimming Championships in 2027, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Rui Falcão, announced this Friday in Luanda.
The government official provided the information to the press at the end of the audience that the Vice-President of the Republic, Esperança da Costa, granted to the president of the International Swimming Federation (FINA), Husain Al Musallam, and the vice-president of the International Swimming Federation and president of the African Swimming Confederation, Sam Ramsany.
“In principle, the application is accepted. We have three international federations here that gave their approval. We will continue to work to fulfill the specifications,” he explained.
He informed that a meeting of the International Federation of the sport is scheduled, in Luanda, to address the matter.
He recalled that the country is hosting the African Championship of the sport with the participation of 42 countries, but 200 nations are expected to come to the global event.
Therefore, he said, it is necessary to create another level of infrastructure and logistical support, so that the country is able to carry out this activity with quality.
Rui Falcão also said that, during the meeting with the Vice-President, the need to generalize the practice of swimming was analyzed, which is why the International Federation made a commitment to Angola to implement its own program to develop the sport.
To this end, he added, it is necessary to work with schools to encourage children to learn to swim, particularly those who live in coastal areas.
“We are happy to be holding the African Championship. We need to keep in perspective that swimming is dominated by white African countries and, fortunately, we have South Africa that provides the counterbalance. Angola is entering with some humility. We won a competition here and another there”, he said.
For his part, the vice-president of the International Swimming Federation and president of the African Swimming Confederation, Sam Ramsany, defended the implementation of the sport at the level of countries, especially in Africa, which pay a lot of attention to the sport. football and forget about swimming.
He added that this sport is very important, because it has several vital components that help save lives.
