Africa-Press – Angola. Angola took over, Monday, the annual African presidency of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) during a meeting at the organization’s headquarters in Paris (France), with the participation of more than 40 African countries.
According to the representation of Angola at the organization, which cites ambassador Ana Maria de Oliveira, the country was unanimously elected by its regional subgroup last year (2022), in an act in which it was represented and in January (precisely yesterday) the handover of folders by the predecessor of Senegal takes place.
Africa is subdivided into five regional groups and the presidency rotates through the respective five groups. Each group, during its turn, appoints the president elected within the regional subgroup.
This year, the Central Africa group, of which Angola is part, and the Africa subgroup elected the country as president of the Africa group, so Namibia occupied the same position in 2021.
The role of the Presidency of Africa, occupied by Angola, is based on the following: Coordinating with the other presidents of the sub-regions on the various subjects related to Education, Science and Culture, working with regional presidents of Africa on the main events of the continent, as well as and from other continents on cooperation agreements.
During yesterday’s event, recognition diplomas were given for the work carried out by some countries.
