Africa-Press – Angola. Angola took over, last Monday, the 2nd vice-presidency of the Review Commission of States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention (OPCW).

The assumption took place during the fifth conference of the Chemical Weapons Convention (OPCW), which runs until the 19th of this month, in the city of The Hague, Netherlands.

In addition to being vice-president, Angola is participating in the conference as a member of the OPCW Executive Council, elected on the 12th of the current month, for a two-year term.

The country was elected as 2nd vice president by the Africa regional group. Algeria occupies the 1st vice-presidency for the 5th revision conference, composed of 18 member states, with two representatives per region.

The fifth conference of the Chemical Weapons Convention (OPCW) addresses issues related to the verification of chemical weapons, international cooperation and assistance, as well as chemical activities for purposes not prohibited by the convention.

This convention becomes increasingly important in the future priorities of the member states, and may contribute to economic and technological development.

The participants also analyzed the universality of the convention, essential to achieve the OPCW’s objectives in favor of international peace and security.

At the event, Angola will be represented by a multidisciplinary delegation, guided by the ambassador and permanent representative of the country to the aforementioned organisation, Maria Isabel Rezende.

The OPCW is an international organization of the United Nations system, composed of 193 states committed to the Chemical Weapons Convention.
