Africa-Press – Angola. The secretary of State for Oil and Gas, José Barroso, assured on Thursday (05) in Luanda the continuity of the development of the oil and gas value chain and cleaner and more sustainable alternative sources, within the scope of the energy transition.

Speaking at the workshop on “Biogas Development in Angola: Challenges and Opportunities,” the official stressed that a fair and inclusive energy transition presupposes a gradual transition from the world’s energy matrix dominated by fossil fuels to a mixed matrix with an important renewable energy component.

“Biogas is a versatile fuel, which can be directly used in vehicles, electricity generation, heating, among others. Therefore, as a renewable alternative, biogas is fundamental to reducing environmental impact and accelerating the adoption of truly sustainable practices in many sectors,” he emphasized.

Beyond its energy use, he added, biogas generates a range of by-products that are beneficial to the economy, including biomethanes, biofertilizers, and hydrogen, which can promote the creation of new public-private partnerships, skilled employment, sustainable income, cost reduction, and improved environmental quality.

He emphasized that the Angolan Executive has adhered to several international conventions and agreements, such as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Paris Agreement, and the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, whose main elements are part of the National Climate Change Strategy.

The official noted that the energy paradigm has been based on the extraction of fossil resources from the subsoil and their transformation into energy, almost entirely disregarding the use of the quantities of waste generated daily, due to the lifestyle of societies.

José Barroso also emphasized that biogas reverses this trend, because it is not just a source of energy, but the link between energy production and waste management.

He added that its integration into the waste value chain can contribute to the development of the circular economy and the creation of other energy sources that can participate in the diversification of the national energy matrix.

According to the Secretary of State, the emission of greenhouse gases is considered one of the main causes of climate change that jeopardizes the quality and continuity of life on Earth.

The workshop, themed “Biogas Development in Angola: Challenges and Opportunities,” was promoted with the objective of fostering collaboration between academia, the productive sector, regulators, and the Government, creating synergies to accelerate the implementation of biogas.

The event aimed to identify strategies for energy recovery from waste, with a positive impact on the agricultural, industrial and energy sectors, and to share successful international experiences, adapting them to the Angolan reality.

The initiative also served to foster the development of local content, ensuring that Angola is not only a consumer of technology, but also a producer of knowledge and innovative solutions.
