Africa-Press – Angola. The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Esmeralda Mendonça, arrived this Monday in Pretoria, Republic of South Africa, to participate in the 24th Ordinary Meeting of the Ministerial Committee of the Organ for Cooperation in the Areas of Policy, Defense and Security of SADC
The meeting aims to achieve economic development, peace, security and growth, in addition to reducing poverty, raising the level and quality of life of the populations of Southern Africa and supporting the most vulnerable social strata, through regional integration.
Upon arrival in Johannesburg, Secretary of State Esmeralda Mendonça was received at Oliver Tambo International Airport by Filomena Delgado, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Angola to South Africa, and Beatriz Morais, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Angola to Botswana and to the Community of Southern Africa Development (SADC).
The Reception Committee to host the Angolan entity included senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and diplomats from the Angolan embassies in South Africa, Botswana and at the SADC Secretariat, respectively.
As defined in the SADC statutes, the Policy, Defense and Security Organ of the Southern African Development Community coordinates cooperation in the areas of Defense, Politics and Security and has a bipartite structure, composed of a “troika”, which operates on an annual rotating basis.
The “troika” comprises the President, the Vice-President and the Outgoing President and a Ministerial Committee, supported by a body of senior officials. Other no less important objectives are the promotion of peace and stability in the region, sustainable development and the fight against AIDS, in addition to the reaffirmation of African sociocultural legacies.
The SADC Secretariat is the body that coordinates the implementation of programs and activities of the Southern African Development Community towards the materialization of its specific objectives, embodied, among others, in the eradication of poverty for the achievement of regional integration.
