Africa-Press – Angola. The political commitment of the Angolan Executive in favor of the objectives of the Global Compact on Refugees was reiterated on Thursday, in Geneva (Switzerland), at the same time that it appealed to the responsibility of States to promote the implementation of lasting solutions for all victims of this scourge in the world.

Talking in the plenary of the 2nd Global Forum on Refugees, which took place on Wednesday until yesterday, in Geneva, Switzerland, the Minister of the Interior and head of the delegation Angolan, Eugénio Laborinho, said he believes that, despite the complexity of the situation, effective international cooperation can still make a difference to achieve this goal.

O governor highlighted that, within the scope of fulfilling the commitments assumed in the 1st Forum, Angola implemented, among other engagements, the cessation clause of the Refugee Status, in 2021, during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Eugénio Laborinho highlighted the voluntary repatriation of refugees welcomed in the settlement of Lóvua, in the province of Lunda-Norte, under the agreement tripartite, in addition to highlighting the successful implementation in the country of the General Register of Refugees and Asylum Seekers.

O Minister of the Interior also said that Angola is committed to carrying out of the objectives of the Global Compact on Refugees, also, at regional level, exemplifying the implementation of the Lobito Corridor project in Africa Southern.

Considered It is important to continue working on programs aimed at protecting and more sustainable international assistance to refugees in Angola, stressing, with regard to the National Development Plan, that the Census General Population, in 2024, will be a tool to measure the indicators of the Global Compact, as it will allow greater inclusion of refugees, returnees and stateless people, so as not to leave anyone behind.

O head of the Angolan delegation to the Forum took the opportunity to welcome the role played by different international partners, with a view to correspondence and the implementation of commitments, highlighting the initiatives developed by UNHCR to promote sharing of burdens and responsibilities, in a more equitable way between the actors, with the central focus on the situation of refugees in the world.

O Global Compact on Refugees is the main global agreement in which States and other interested actors meet every four years to carry out the take stock of progress achieved and make new commitments to help achieve the objectives.

Angola is, since last April, number 108 out of a total of 127 Member States of the UNHCR Executive Committee and has worked in partnership with the UN agency on implementation of reception and integration policies and programs for refugees in the country.

A Angolan delegation to the event also includes the secretaries of State for Foreign Relations and Human Rights and Citizenship (MINJUSDH), Ana Celeste Januário, permanent representative of Angola to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva, Margarida Izata, and technicians from ministries of Foreign Affairs, Justice and Human Rights and Interior.
