Africa-Press – Angola. Angola expressed its concern on Thursday at the permanence of the economic and financial embargo against Cuba, despite several UN General Assembly resolutions having been adopted over almost six decades, with a view to ending it.

This position was expressed by the Deputy Permanent Representative of the Angolan Mission to the UN, João Gimolieca, when speaking at the 28th Plenary Meeting of the General Assembly.

In his speech, the diplomat recalled that in June 2021, Angola voted in favor of the resolution entitled “ending the embargo against Cuba”, expressing its concern for the issue to be resolved once and for all.

He cited the UN Secretary-General’s statements on the defense of the United Nations Charter according to which the challenges facing the world today call for the importance of multilateral solutions – one of the tools to prevent and resolve these challenges is enshrined in the Charter.

“However, the International Community falls short of the values of these principles”, pointed out João Gimolieca

For the diplomat, the economic and financial blockade against Cuba caused serious obstacles to the economic, cultural and social development of the island, with a significant negative impact on several sensitive sectors, such as agriculture, public health services, affecting the country’s sustainable development.

Vote

After the debate, the meeting continued with the vote on the draft resolution A/77/L5-Necessity to end the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba.

The document obtained 185 votes in favour, two against and an equal number of abstentions.
