Actions implemented

Ruth Adriano Mendes presented some of the actions implemented by Angola, within the framework of the recommendations of the 54th Plenary Assembly of the SADC Parliamentary Forum, held last year.

The parliamentarian highlighted the ongoing work to create bills whose main focus is children, such as the Children’s Parliament, the national early childhood policy and its implementation plan, in awareness-raising actions through the National Children’s Institute (INAC), the National Council for Social Action and the Municipalization of the 11 Commitments.

According to the Angolan MP, the implementation of the aforementioned actions also aims to eradicate child marriage and protect children who are victims of this serious social problem. Regarding the mechanisms that promote women’s participation in politics, she stressed that decision-making in Angola is based on the principle of gender equity and equality, which is expressed in Presidential Decree No. 222/13 of 24 December, linked to the Constitution of the Republic (CRA), as a basic instrument for methodological guidance, at all levels, to promote women’s participation in decision-making bodies.

“For example, the position of Vice-President of the Republic is held by a woman, of the three Ministers of State one is a woman and, in the Central Government, of the 23 ministries, eight are headed by women, making a total of 39 percent. At the level of Secretaries of State, of the 49 existing, 11 positions are occupied by women. In the provincial governments, of the 18 provinces in the country, four women are governors”, highlighted Ruth Adriano Mendes.

Regarding recommendations regarding gender equality and women’s empowerment, she explained that the Ministry of Social Action, Family and Women’s Promotion signed a protocol with the National Bank of Angola (BNA) in the area of education and financial inclusion of women, so that they can manage businesses on an equal footing with men.
