Angola Highlights Creative Economy in Sustainable Development

Africa-Press – Angola. The Permanent Mission of Angola to the United Nations in Geneva defended, on Monday, the importance of the creative economy for sustainable development and the capacity to generate income, foster innovation and promote cultural exchange. The Permanent Mission is participating in the 15th Session of the Commission on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), which runs until tomorrow, at the Palace of the United Nations, in Geneva.

At the meeting, Angola presented yesterday the report of the 11th multiannual meeting of experts on trade, services and development.

According to a statement, the Angolan delegation highlighted the contribution of the creative industries, responsible for around 3.1% of global GDP and 6.2% of global employment.

Regarding developing countries, it highlighted that the growth of creative services increased from 10% to 20% between 2010 and 2022, recognizing a significant advance. The report highlighted the main challenges faced by the United Nations, such as the lack of adequate infrastructure, limited access to quality data, digital divides, high regulatory barriers, market concentration by large companies from developed countries and issues related to intellectual property and cultural diversity.

In the report, Angola proposed measures to overcome these challenges by strengthening legislation on intellectual property rights, improving the skills of professionals in the creative sector, investing in digital infrastructure and promoting public policies that encourage cultural diversity and protect the heritage of marginalized groups.

In the same document, Angola also supported the promotion of international partnerships as a strategic instrument for the transfer of knowledge and technologies, in addition to the need to create regulatory frameworks that can keep up with advances in Artificial Intelligence and digitalization. The Secretariat of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) presented the results of the working group created and suggested that this topic be permanently placed on the agenda of future meetings and proposed the creation of a knowledge-sharing centre, with a handbook for policymakers and an online repository of good practices.

The report also states that the Secretariat of the Commission is working on finalising the handbook on data for trade in services and development policies, a document that should be completed before the 16th Session of UNCTAD.
