Africa-Press – Angola. On Thursday, in Luanda, the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Esmeralda Mendonça, highlighted the importance of political and diplomatic relations between Angola and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, considering the state visit to the country by the late President Hugo Chávez to be the most important milestone in these friendly ties. The minister made these statements during the 1st Meeting of the Political Consultation Mechanism between the two countries, as part of the three-day working visit to Angola by the Venezuelan Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Africa, Yuri Pimentel.
Esmeralda Mendonça recalled that Angola and Venezuela signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Political Consultations between senior diplomatic officials from both countries in April 2009.
“The exercise we carried out today gives consistency to this important legal instrument of cooperation”, stressed Esmeralda Mendonça, stressing that she hopes that these consultations may influence other meetings, as well as regular contacts at the level of representatives in international organizations of which Angola and Venezuela are members.
The Angolan diplomat added that diplomatic contacts are underway for the holding of the 1st Meeting of the Bilateral Commission and, at the event, congratulated the Venezuelan people for the holding of the July 2024 Electoral Poll, particularly to statesman Nicolás Maduro, for his re-election to the office of President of the Republic.Regarding the elevation of the Consulate General of Angola in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, to the status of Embassy, she stressed that the matter has received special attention from the Angolan Executive.
According to Esmeralda Mendonça, Angola and Venezuela have potential that, if well explored, could result in an increase in partnership and exchange of experiences between the business sectors of both countries, with reciprocal benefits.
For the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Venezuela, Yuri Pimentel, the meeting reinforces the historical ties that unite the two countries, united in the fight against colonialism and injustice.
“This meeting is even more special because it takes place in the year in which our sister country, Angola, celebrates 50 years of Independence”, he stressed, highlighting the fact that the cooperation agenda focuses on the areas of Energy, Mining, Trade, Science and Technology, Culture, Education, Tourism, Economy, electoral processes and the diamond sector through Kimberly certification.
