Africa-Press – Angola. Four of the main current national swimmers represent the country in the World Championship of pure swimming, to be held from 23 to 30 July, in the Japanese city of Fukuoka, according to the call of the Angolan Federation of the sport.
These are the athletes from 1.o de Agosto Salvador Gordo, leader of the national ranking in men, with 729 points, Lia Lima (1st place in the ranking in women, with 645 points), Henrique Mascarenhas (2nd with 721 points) and Maria Freitas (2nd with 628 pts), both from Clube Naútico.
Salvador, in addition to having recently broken, in Luanda, the previous record (56.34 ) of zone IV in the 100m butterfly, with a time of (56.31-gold medal) he is also the champion of the region in the 200m butterfly (2:10.62 ).
Henrique has been the best indoor unit in freestyles, where he won three gold medals, namely in the 50m (24.23), 100m (52.74) and 200m (1:56.50) in the African event recently held in Luanda.
In females, Lia is the most quoted, standing out in the moth style, in which she has been the reference. At the zonal African she won four gold medals in the 50m butterfly (29.91), 100m butterfly (1:07.38), 200m butterfly (2:30.07) and the 100m backstroke (1:13.31).
On the other hand, Maria, who presents herself as a multipurpose athlete with greater experience in freestyle and breaststroke, recently emerged in the African zonal, where she was distinguished as the most valuable swimmer (MVP).
In this event, the swimmer won six gold medals, namely in the 50m breaststroke (35.95), 50m backstroke (32.98), 100m freestyle (1:01.83), 200m freestyle (2:14.24), gold 100m backstroke (1:13.31) and 200m styles (2:33.05).
In the last edition, in 2022, in Hungary, Angola participated with Salvador Gordo, Daniel Francisco, Lia Lima and Maria Freitas and none of them made it past the knockout phase.
