Africa-Press – Angola. Angola participates, between the 19th and 23rd of this month, in New York (USA), in the 3rd United Nations High Level Conference on Combating Terrorism.

According to a note from the Permanent Mission of Angola to the United Nations, the conference presents itself as an opportunity for the international community to renew and develop the current multilateral efforts, harmonized and oriented towards results, in the prevention and fight against terrorism, under the auspices of the United Nations.

Over two days, Heads of Counter-Terrorism Agencies and stakeholders will review key priorities in the fight against terrorism, in light of the four pillars of the UN Global Strategy.

Taking place under the motto “Combating terrorism through reinvigorated multilateralism and institutional cooperation”, the conference will serve as a starting point for the preparation of the New Agenda for Peace, proposed by the Secretary-General in his report on the Common Agenda and for the African Counter-Terrorism Summit, scheduled for 2024, in the Federative Republic of Nigeria.

The conference is part of the activities of the Third Week of Combating Terrorism, a biennial event for Member States and international partners in the fight against terrorism.

For this year, interrelated segments are planned, with around 40 parallel events.

UN Global Strategy Against Terrorism

The UN General Assembly adopted, by consensus, the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy on 8 September 2006.

The strategy is a unique global tool to enhance national, regional and international efforts to combat terrorism.

The General Assembly reviews the Strategy every two years, making it a document synchronized with Member States’ counter-terrorism priorities.

Angola will take part in the event with a delegation headed by the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Esmeralda Mendonça.
