Africa-Press – Angola. Aspects linked to the Angolan Government ́s commitment to increasing renewable energy in the national electricity matrix, on Tuesday, in Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), were discussed by the secretary of State for Energy, Arlindo Carlos.

He was speaking at a high-level roundtable on the “Interaction of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Transition to Clean Energy: Opportunities, Challenges and Policy Strategies”, as part of the activities of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2025 (ADSW), taking place from the 14th to the 16th of this month, according to a note from the Angolan Embassy in this Middle Eastern country.

He highlighted the national and regional interconnections, hydroelectric and photovoltaic projects in operation in the country, which contribute 64% of the electrical production matrix, also referring to the recommended plans to increase production capacity, which is around 6.4% GW, to more than 9 GW by 2027, of which 70% will come from clean sources.

According to the secretary of State, who was accompanied by the Angolan ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, Júlio Maiato, interconnections between countries or regions from the Government’s perspective should be interpreted as economic objects with reciprocal and ultra-sensitive advantages.

He mentioned that the government’s commitment is to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

In a panel attended by several entities, including representatives from Africa and other continents, with emphasis on the director general of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the Angolan official appealed to the need for governments to join synergies that lead to a clear cyber security strategy and policies and contribute to the uninterrupted functioning of electricity systems which, through Artificial Intelligence, are less vulnerable to climate change.

He defended the promotion of technical knowledge capable of allowing better understanding and use of the advantages that artificial intelligence brings and rigorous preparation to mitigate risks to this base.

The event, which takes place under the name “The Nexus of Next. Supercharging Sustainable Progress”, is part of the Future Energy World Summit 2025 and is attended by heads of state and government representatives, as well as business and technology leaders from more than 100 countries.

The event promoted by the President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the event discusses, among other aspects, the promotion of sustainable solutions.

At the opening, 11 pioneering organizations and high schools around the world were awarded the “Zayed Sustainability Award”, a distinction awarded by the United Arab Emirates statesman.

Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) takes place one day after the 15th Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) held in this city, in which Angola attended in its capacity as vice-president, in 2024, for the African group. The country was replaced, in the rotating position, by Namibia.

At the time, the secretary of State highlighted the country’s commitment to renewable energy and combating the effects of climate change in the sector, highlighting the need for a fair and balanced energy transition.
