Africa-Press – Angola. Angola’s diamond production in 2024 surpassed 14 million carats and it is the highest performance ever recorded in the domestic sector, the Minister of Mineral Resources, Oil, and Gas, Diamantino Azevedo, revealed Thursday in Luanda.
Speaking to the press during the launch of the 3rd edition of the Angola 2025 International Mining Conference, to be held on October 22nd and 23rd in Luanda this year, the minister stated that “diamond production in 2024 reached the targets set for this mandate.”
Although he did not disclose the financial impact of this production, he informed that the average price per carat had a drop of about four percent in international diamond markets, driven mainly by surpluses and the wave of synthetic diamonds
It is important to highlight that in 2023, national diamond production was approximately eight million carats.
Minister Diamantino Azevedo added that domestic diamond production has contributed to the sector’s dynamism as well as for job creation.
When asked about reports of a possible staff reduction at the Catoca diamond project in Lunda Sul province, he said that the industry is part of the global economy and “keeping it active requires certain measures.”
“The diamond sector is an industry like any other. The extractive industry is volatile, and we do not control prices. If, by any chance, situations arise that require certain measures to be taken, they will be taken to ensure the survival of this company,” he emphasized.
This third edition of the Angola International Mining Conference 2025 is expected to bring together a thousand delegates from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, the United States of America, China, India, Belgium and Australia.
