Angola Reports 13000 Deaths 28000 New HIV AIDS Cases

Africa-Press – Angola. At least 350,000 people are living with HIV/AIDS in Angola, which records an annual average of 28,000 new infections and 13,000 deaths associated with the disease, the main Angolan non-governmental organization fighting the disease revealed yesterday.

The president of the Angolan Network of AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria Service Organizations (ANASO), António Coelho, who was speaking after a meeting with the Vice-President of Angola, Esperança da Costa, said that the country continues to record an HIV/AIDS prevalence rate of 2%.

António Coelho, quoted by the Angola Press Agency, stated that the country currently has around 350,000 people living with the disease, out of the country’s current population of 35 million.

The head of ANASO also announced that the country records, on average, 28,000 new infections per year and around 13,000 deaths associated with the disease, detailing that there are approximately 32,000 children and 36,000 young people living with the disease.

Coelho also expressed concern about the limited international funding available to combat the disease, saying that the situation “could worsen the situation and reduce the quality and availability of services provided to communities,” particularly access to antiretrovirals, tests, reagents and condoms.

ANASO, in this meeting with the Vice-President of Angola, noted the leader of the NGO, reaffirmed its willingness to support the Angolan executive in coordinating the actions of the National Commission for the Fight against AIDS and Major Endemic Diseases, as well as in community strengthening.
