Africa-Press – Angola. Angolan Planning Minister Victor Hugo Guillerme reaffirmed his country’s support for the “M300” initiative, which aims to provide 300 million Africans with electricity access by 2030.
Guilherme reaffirmed this commitment during a meeting with World Bank Group President Ajay Banga, International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, and the group of African governors from the two financial institutions. The meeting was held as part of the annual meetings, which will take place from October 13 to 18.
Guilherme emphasized the importance of a strong start for this initiative, which has already registered 30 million connections in 28 countries.
According to Guilherme, African governments have requested that the World Bank Group develop an implementation plan with numerical baselines and targets for constructing, rehabilitating, expanding, or modernizing energy infrastructure and the transmission and distribution lines necessary to achieve the M300 objectives by 2030.
To increase the resilience of the energy chain, African countries are requesting the World Bank Group’s support for manufacturing energy components, including solar panels, wind turbines, and emission systems, in the market.
In turn, World Bank Group President Ajay Banga emphasized the need to conduct geospatial analyses of each country to determine whether expanding agriculture or decentralizing local energy is the correct solution, depending on the cost-benefit analysis of each project.
Banga also expressed support for local solar panel manufacturing projects.
The Angolan delegation at the annual meetings of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is led by Minister of Planning Victor Hugo Guilherme and includes officials from the Ministries of Finance, Planning, Transport, and the National Bank of Angola (BNA).
The meetings began on Monday (13) and will end next Saturday.
