Africa-Press – Angola. The director general of the National Demining Center (CND) reported, this Saturday, in Huambo, that 85 percent of Angolan territory is free of mines.
The official was speaking to the press after the visit of the Minister of National Defense and Veterans of the Nation, João Ernesto dos Santos, to the maintenance base of the National Demining Center, in the town of Essaque, municipality of Chicala-Cholohanga, in the eastern corridors of the province of Huambo.
According to Carlos Sachimo, to date, the provinces of Cuanza Norte, Huambo, Malanje, Uíge and Zaire are completely free from groups and minefields implemented during the armed conflict, although there are some unexploded explosive devices proliferated throughout Angola. .
He assured that the National Demining Center is currently creating conditions for certification of provinces that are truly out of danger from mines, but not from unexploded ordnance.
He indicated the provinces of Bié, Cuando and Moxico as those that still present some danger, despite not leading to concern or the myth of situations that the country is not demined.
The official said that technical and non-technical research, verification and demining operations are currently taking place in the provinces of Cabinda, Cuando Cubango, Huíla, Lunda Norte and Moxico.
Meanwhile, he highlighted the verification of the Huambo – Huíla transport line and the demining of the Cuito Cunavale – Mavinga (Cuando Cubango), Malange – Xá-Muteba, Buco Zau – Belize (Cabinda) sections, the Luvo (Zaire) and the Luau (Moxico), in addition to the Lucusse – Luau – Moxico national road.
The official said that awareness raising activities are also taking place on the risks of mines and unexploded ordnance.
At the location, the Minister of National Defense and Veterans of the Fatherland, João Ernesto dos Santos, accompanied by the governor of the province of Huambo, Lotti Nolika, was informed about the current status of the technical support equipment for demining operations and saw the repair workshop , maintenance of special means and equipment for this activity.
Afterwards, the government official, who works in Huambo until Sunday, visited the Army Troop Training Center “Heróis de Kangamba”, located 24 kilometers east of the Central Military Region Command Post, as well as the works at the community’s Regional Hospital castrense, in the Cavongue neighborhood, on the outskirts of the city of Huambo.
