Africa-Press – Angola. An Angolan delegation from the Ministry of Environment has been participating, since the 5th of this month, in the preparatory meetings for the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which are taking place in the city of Baku, Azerbaijan.According to data from the event’s organizers, the official opening of COP29 will take place on Monday the 11th at the Baku Olympic Stadium, a more technical moment, with the plenary sessions with the Heads of State and Government taking place only on the 12th and 13th.
During the preparatory meetings, the Regional Negotiating Groups, of which Angola is a member, discuss and analyse, in detail, the agendas of the different subsidiary bodies and working groups of the convention, with the aim of developing common positions for the negotiation processes of the various themes.
Among the main priorities of COP29, which runs until 22 November, is securing a new target on climate finance.
Many countries argue that without financial assistance they are unable to do what is necessary to limit global warming to 1.5°C compared to the pre-industrial revolution period.
The UN also warns that ensuring that each country has the means to take much stronger climate action, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and build resilient communities is essential to avoid even more serious consequences than those the world already faces today.
