Africa-Press – Angola. Angola is attending the High-Level Meeting on Least Developed Countries taking place in Doha, Qatar, under the theme “Ambitious Global Partnerships for Sustainable and Resilient Graduation in Least Developed Countries”.
The information was provided on Tuesday by the Angolan diplomatic representation in that country, adding that the event aims to reinforce global partnerships and promote innovative instruments that ensure a sustainable, resilient and irreversible graduation for Least Developed Countries, in alignment with the objectives of the Doha Action Program and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The permanent representative of Angola to the United Nations, ambassador Francisco José da Cruz and the extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador to Qatar, António Ramos da Cruz ate attending the event.
When speaking at the High-Level Ministerial Dialogue, on Strategic Paths Amid a Challenging Global Development Scenario and Unlocking New Opportunities, Ambassador Francisco José da Cruz argued that Angola’s trajectory towards leaving the list of Least Developed Countries demonstrates the importance of adopting strategic and resilient paths in the face of an extremely challenging global development scenario to achieve a sustainable and irreversible graduation.
He clarified that Angola’s graduation and its removal from the list of Least Developed Countries was postponed twice, largely due to external shocks — including oil price volatility and the socioeconomic impacts of COVID-19. This reduced his per capita Gross National Income below the threshold required for an income-only exception.
According to the diplomat, Angola activated the Reinforced Monitoring Mechanism, as foreseen in the Doha Program of Action and has since worked in close collaboration with the Development Policy Committee, to define a new strategy and schedule for the aforementioned graduation.
The diplomat argued that this process reinforced the country’s need to strengthen human capital, accelerate economic diversification and reduce structural vulnerabilities.
On the other hand, he recognized that Angola’s departure from the list of least developed countries will represent new opportunities, namely access to more diversified financing instruments and reinforced integration in global value chains.
He reiterated that the country is committed to ensuring that its future graduation is not only timely, but also sustainable, inclusive and likely to promote long-term development gains.
The High-Level Meeting on Least Developed Countries, which runs until the 4th, brings together ministers, senior government officials, development partners, international financial institutions, regional development banks and entities from the United Nations system, as well as representatives from civil society, the private sector and academia.
