Africa-Press – Angola. The Angolan Executive highlighted, on Monday, that Angola “bows with deep respect” before the memory of one of its most dedicated sons, whose death represents “a devastating blow” for the nation and a strong shake in the foundations of the Angolan State.

The government expressed this fact in a message read by the Minister of State and Head of the Military House of the President of the Republic, Francisco Pereira Furtado, at the nationalist’s tribute ceremony, held at the Presidency’s Protocol Complex, witnessed by the President of the Republic, João Lourenço.

On the occasion, the journey of Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos was described, which was essential in the decisive moments of the contemporary history of Angola.

Born in Luanda, on March 5, 1952, Nandó embraced the cause of nationalism from an early age and actively participated in the process that culminated in the proclamation of national independence, on November 11, 1975, recalled the ruler when reading the document.

The message highlights that after joining the Popular Armed Forces for the Liberation of Angola (FAPLA), he was transferred, in 1976, to the People’s Police Corps of Angola (CPPA), where he built a solid career, becoming Commander-General of the National Police and, later, Minister of the Interior.

Throughout a life dedicated to public service, he performed several highly responsible roles, with emphasis on Prime Minister, Vice-President of the Republic and President of the National Assembly, positions in which, according to the Executive, he demonstrated “a high sense of State, firmness, respect for institutions and fidelity to the Constitution of the Republic of Angola”.

He also recalls his decisive role in the peace processes, as a member of the Joint Political-Military Commission and the Political Affairs Commission within the scope of the Bicesse Accords, as well as coordinator of the Interministerial Commission for the Luena Peace Accords.

He emphasizes that, described as a serene, affable man with considered decisions, Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos believed that governing is, above all, serving with humility, empathy and commitment to the common good.

The Executive also highlights its discreet stance and refusal of personal protagonism, characteristics that made it a pillar of the country’s political and institutional stability in sensitive moments of national life.

“His greatest legacy is not limited to the positions he held, but to the values he defended”, says the message, pointing out loyalty to the country, respect for institutions, humility in the exercise of power and commitment to unity, national reconciliation and peace as indelible marks of his career.

Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos, concludes the statement, “will live forever in the history of the Republic of Angola, in the memory of its people and in the conscience of the nation”.

The remains of the late Angolan leader were buried today, Monday, at the Alto das Cruzes Cemetery.
