Africa-Press – Angola. Vice President Esperança da Costa said on Monday in Luanda that the Executive branch plans to build approximately 55 new schools in the country over the coming years, as part of the Girls’ Empowerment and Learning for All Project (PAT II).

Speaking to the press following a visit to assess the progress of renovation, expansion, and equipping works at some schools in the capital, he emphasized, without going into detail, that education is the pillar and fundamental driver of the country’s development.

For Esperança da Costa, Angola seeks increased inclusive, sustainable, and prosperous development for all Angolans, having reaffirmed the Executive’s commitment to strengthening the institutional capacity of schools to ensure increasingly better-quality education, emphasizing that responsibility must also lie with families, the population, and society as a whole.

The Vice-President announced that two primary and secondary schools will be operational for the next school year (2025/2026), also under the Girls’ Empowerment and Learning for All Project (PAT II).

Esperança da Costa said the school in the municipality of Rangel, called 1530, is completed and classes will begin this year, as will school 1536, formerly 147, in the municipality of Sambizanga, after undergoing renovation and expansion work, reinforcing the laboratories, and improving sports facilities.

“We believe that, after the necessary equipment, we are ready to have an institution capable of meeting the needs of the upcoming new school year,” he said.

Construction

Regarding the remaining construction projects in 15 primary and secondary schools, the Vice-President reiterated the Executive’s commitment to operational them in the 2026/2027 school year, with improved equipment, new courses, new options, and training offerings better adapted to the job market.

According to the Vice President, the visit served to assess the progress of the projects related to the renovation of several schools in the urban areas of Luanda, as part of the School Modernization and Expansion Program to better meet needs.

PAT II program

PAT II program focuses on girls’ empowerment and learning for all and is a partnership between the Angolan government and the World Bank.

Resources are made available based on a budget duly approved by the World Bank, according to the needs of the actions already planned within the project.

The project, in partnership with ministerial departments, provides for the expansion of education for young adults, the awarding of scholarships for girls and boys, the construction and rehabilitation of schools, the training of teachers and administrators, the management and improvement of the project, and the development of the management capacity of local staff.
