Africa-Press – Angola. Angolan President João Lourenço traveled on Friday to Johannesburg, South Africa, to participate in the G20 Summit in his capacity as chairperson of the African Union (AU).

Accompanied by First Lady Ana Dias Lourenço, President Lourenço received farewell greetings from Minister of State and Head of the Military House of the President of the Republic Francisco Furtado.

The Johannesburg meeting marks the main event of South Africa’s presidency of the group and will discuss several topics of global interest, with a strong focus on economic issues.

Prominent topics include sustainable inclusive economic growth, reducing inequalities, and the commitment to not leaving any country behind.

According to the program, participants will also address the current challenges of building and modernizing economies; the persistent imbalance between the developed North and the Global South; development financing needs; and the exacerbated burden of external debt, which particularly affects the least developed countries.

The G20 comprises the world’s leading economies, representing 85% of the global GDP, 75% of international trade, and two-thirds of the world’s population.

Like the European Union, the African Union has been a permanent member of the group since the summit held in India in September 2023. This aims to emphasize Africa’s voice and influence decisions on key issues on the G20 agenda.
