Africa-Press – Angola. The Speaker of the National Assembly (AN), Adão de Almeida, on Monday in Luanda reaffirmed the need for profound reforms at the United Nations (UN), particularly in the Security Council (SC), in order to guarantee greater balance among States and strengthen multilateral cooperation.
He was speaking during the solemn plenary session held in honor of the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres.
Adão de Almeida expressed concern about the growing international instability, marked by conflicts in Africa, the Middle East, as well as in Europe.
The parliamentary leader advocated dialogue and respect for international law as essential paths to crisis resolution. He also took the opportunity to warn about the worsening of global economic inequalities.
Taking international data into account, Adão de Almeida stated that 1% of the population holds 45% of the world’s wealth, while half the population holds only 2%.
He stated that this difference compromises social peace and makes the implementation of reforms in the international financial system urgent.
The politician also highlighted the need for a fair energy transition that does not harm the least developed nations, generally those that are least significant for global pollution.
He said that the public in these countries is a threat of global dimension, requiring effective restraining mechanisms to allow for their development.
Adão de Almeida emphasized that the 23 years of peace represent a historic turning point for Angola, after a long period of conflict, and reaffirmed that the country’s priorities include consolidating democracy, strengthening institutions, and promoting respect for the rights and duties of citizens.
During his speech, the Angolan parliament Speaker also touched on the need for continued investment in essential infrastructure, such as schools, hospitals, roads, bridges and drinking water supply systems.
