Africa-Press – Angola. The Angolan parliamentary delegation visited, this Wednesday, the port infrastructure of Tanger MED, as part of the work program in Morocco.
The delegation led by the President of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira, received detailed information about the project and its importance in the transport sector worldwide.
More than a port, Tanger MED is a logistics platform, a strategic priority for Morocco’s economic and social development and part of the export-oriented economic policy.
Its particular position, in the Strait of Gibraltar, at the crossroads of the two main maritime routes and 15 kilometers from the European Union, allows it to serve a market of hundreds of millions of consumers.
In addition, the Tanger MED complex has a dual mission: to be a transshipment platform dedicated to international and regional container movements and to be an import and export port with the aim of improving the region’s competitiveness.
The installation of free industrial and logistics zones in the complex gives operators exceptional advantages: from advantageous customs regulation, to simplified customs processes, unlimited VAT exemption and qualified, abundant and cheap labor.
The port of Tanger MED has the capacity to process 9 million containers, 7 million passengers, 1 million vehicles and 700,000 heavy vehicles.
The port can also receive seven ships at the same time.
With its extension, the Moroccan port exceeds the infrastructure of Algeciras (Spain), Valencia (Spain) and Gioia (Italy) and connects Morocco to 77 countries and 186 ports around the world.
In 2018 alone, it handled US$33.14 billion in exports and imports. And thanks to the Port of Tangier MED, many multinationals have established their factories in and around Tangier, a total of 912 companies – mainly from the logistics, automotive, aeronautics, textiles and other sectors – currently operate close to the port and use it to transport your products. These companies created 75,000 jobs.
Today, 40 percent of Tanger MED’s cargo traffic is with West Africa, 20 percent with Europe and 10 percent with the Americas.
The transhipment of goods in Morocco saves around 10 days for maritime carriers operating in the sub-region, compared to other ports in the Mediterranean.
According to data, around 90 percent of the volumes of containers that pass through the port of Tangier are in transit to other destinations.
By the way, Carolina Cerqueira highlighted the fact that it is a private public project that comes from the strategic vision of the King of Morocco Mohamed VI, who designed the creation of a port platform for transport and transport services for people, goods and goods.
According to the Angolan parliamentary leader, it is the result of the commitment of the Moroccan Government and the private sector, embodied in the construction of social, economic and cultural infrastructures.
As part of her visit to Morocco, the President of the National Assembly signed, on Tuesday, an agreement with the Chamber of Representatives.
During the two days of work, the Angolan parliamentary delegation met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Residents Abroad, Nasser Bourita, and the President of the Chamber of Councillors, Naam Miyara.
The agenda also included a visit to the Mausoleum of King Mohammed V, during which Carolina Cerqueira honored the monarch with the laying of a wreath.
The Angolan parliamentary delegation is made up of deputies Alcides Sakala, Lourdes Caposso and Narciso Benedito, as well as the secretary general of the National Assembly, Agostinho Nery.
