Africa-Press – Angola. The outgoing chairperson of the African Union, João Lourenço, congratulated on Saturday the Head of State of Burundi, Evariste Ndayishimiye, on his election as chairperson of the continental organization.
In his handover statement, Lourenço said that the Burundian statesman’s unanimous election represents recognition of his leadership qualities, and guarantees that the African Union will be led with wisdom and responsibility in the service of Africa’s common interests and objectives.
Lourenço called for African countries to unite in addressing the challenge of ensuring sustainable access to water and safe sanitation systems across the continent.
The Angolan president stressed that at the summit, member states had committed to advancing a crucial issue for the continent linked to access to drinking water and sanitation — an indispensable condition for achieving the goals of Agenda 2063.
Lourenço underscored that access to safe water is a moral and political imperative which requires firm commitment from governments and their partners, including companies, civic associations, and communities.
The Angolan president expressed confidence that these combined efforts would allow for a more effective response to one of Africa’s most pressing problems, which has a direct impact on sustainable development and the improvement of living conditions.
Lourenço acknowledged the work of the African Union Commission, its chairperson, technicians, and other collaborators. He said that their dedication and competence had contributed to affirming the dignity of the continent and defining a horizon of visible, concrete progress.
The Angolan Head of State also expressed confidence that all African nations would support Burundi’s new leadership, with the aim of ensuring the continuity of defined programs and strengthening unity, solidarity, peace and stability on the continent.
