Angolan President Warns of Barriers to Financing for Africa

Africa-Press – Angola. The African Union (AU) Chairperson and Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço, warned on Wednesday in Yokohama, of the barriers that continue to limit Africa’s access to international financing, a situation that delays the implementation of the continent’s development agenda.

Speaking at the 9th Tokyo International Conference on Africa’s Development (TICAD9), João Lourenço emphasized that the credit ratings assigned to many African countries classify them as “high-risk” borrowers, which hinders access to low-cost capital.

He emphasized that these resources are essential for infrastructure projects, electrification, industrialization, and technological advancement. “Africa needs fairer and more accessible international financing solutions that will accelerate its development programs,” the statesman stated, calling for greater openness from credit institutions and creditor countries.

The Angolan Head of State considered Japan a reliable partner, recalling that Angola has benefited from structural projects financed under favorable conditions. He also emphasized that cooperation with Tokyo is part of the priorities of the rotating presidency of the African Union, particularly in the area of infrastructure construction.

João Lourenço also recalled the International Conference on Infrastructure Financing as a Factor for Africa’s Development held in October, inviting Japan to participate. TICAD9 runs until Friday in Yokohama and brings together African leaders, international partners, and businesspeople to strengthen cooperation and promote investment in Africa.
