Africa-Press – Angola. The Angolan Junior National Team’s swimmer, Santiago Guimarães, reached a historic record on the national swimming scene, by leading the list of records and medals at the International Championship, which ended on Sunday at the Alvalade swimming pool, in Luanda.
The 14-year-old athlete from Luanda Island Nautical Club (CNIL) beat three of the competition’s seven records, which was held in the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of National Independence, to be marked on 11 November.
The achievement was in the 50m butterfly category, with a time of 27.32, in the 400m freestyle, with 4:27.37 and in the 200m freestyle category, with 2:05.38.
He won six gold medals, making him the most valuable player (MVP) of the competition in the men’s category.
This is the first time that a junior swimmer has performed this feat in an international event, while representing the Angolan team.
The only record in the sport was that of Salvador Gordo, who as a junior had won four medals at the 2017 African Championships in Cairo, Egypt.
At the time, the swimmer, now a senior, won four medals, including two silver (in the 50m backstroke and 100m butterfly) and the same number of bronze (50m butterfly and 200m medley), which were previously unbeatable.
However, at the International Championships, Angola came second, with 65 medals, 18 gold, 17 silver and 30 bronze.
The tournament was won by Namibia, which won with 37 medals, of which 22 gold, 10 silver and 5 bronze.
Swimmers from Cabo Verde, Zambia, Mozambique and Portugal also participated.
