Africa-Press – Angola. Vice President Esperança da Costa on Tuesday (28) in Washington D.C., United States of America (US), visited Howard University as part of strengthening cooperation in the areas of research, teaching and scientific research.
The visit aimed to reinforce cooperation with the American institution, particularly in the areas of medical simulation, scientific training and applied research.
The university integrates several academic and research units, including the Sickle Cell Anemia Hospitals, the Cancer Treatment Center, the Training Center and the Faculty of Biology.
During the visit, the Vice-President familiarized herself with the work of the higher education institution and its health facilities.
At the end of the meeting, the Vice-President offered to the Rector of Howard University, Anthony K. Wutoh, a copy of her book entitled “Espécies Marinhas Mais Frequentes na Costa Angolana” (Most Frequent Marine Species on the Angolan Coast), already autographed by herself.
On the occasion, the secretary of State for Higher Education, Alice de Almeida, stated that among the topics, there is the need to improve the conditions of simulation centers in some higher education institutions in Angola.
She added that it is equally important to promote joint training with the US university, with a view to creating specific programs in the areas of health and biological sciences.
In turn, the Rector of the public Agostinho Neto University (UAN), Pedro Magalhães, stressed that Angola had expressed interest in cooperating in various fields with Howard University, recalling that a cooperation instrument had already been drawn up, but is not yet official.
With the visit Esperança da Costa, the scholar rekindled Angolan interest in strengthening relations with the North American institution, highlighting the importance of Howard University’s experience in simulation laboratories, particularly for health sciences and biology.
“We saw here a reality that can enrich our university, especially with regard to practical classes and experience in simulation laboratories”, highlighted Pedro Magalhães, for whom Angolan interest is not limited to the health field, but encompasses all areas of knowledge.
Howard University is a private research institution located in Washington D.C., founded in 1867.
It is recognized as a center of excellence for black students by offering undergraduate and graduate programs in more than 120 areas of study, distributed across 14 schools and colleges, including law, medicine, and journalism.
Howard University was named after General Oliver Otis Howard, a hero of the American Civil War and was created to provide educational opportunities for African Americans during an era of segregation, later extending to students of all races and social classes.
It was the first university to establish a law school for black students and is often called the “Black Harvard” for its academic excellence and historical contribution.
However, with Carnegie R1 research institution status, Howard University stands out in areas such as social work, law, and African American studies, training prominent leaders in the fields of civil rights, politics, arts, and sciences.
