Angolan Women Receive Honorary Doctorate in Spain

Africa-Press – Angola. Six Angolan women were awarded on Saturday, the title of Doctor Honoris Causa in the categories of Culture, Honor, and Humanity, during the annual conference of the International Chamber of Writers and Artists (CIESART), which takes place in Spain from December 4th to 8th.

According to a source, the women are writers, academics, and diplomats Egna Alegre de Sousa, Fernanda dos Santos de Benedito, Sandra Mainsel, Sílvia da Cruz, Lenisha Baio, and Luzia Oliveira.

The source added that the Angolan participation in the CIESART highlighted the defence of peace, communication and human value as active agents in promoting harmony between nations and cultures,

The event reflected upon and discussed principles that strengthen world peace, the promotion of literature, the preservation of native cultures and languages, the promotion of science, the dissemination of all arts, as well as the union of nations.

The occasion served as a platform for sharing perspectives on globalization, peace, communication, and human values in a meeting that brought together diverse cultures and nations.

The writer and diplomat Egna Alegre de Sousa, appointed as chairwoman of the Intercontinental Commission for the African Continent of CIESART, presented a speech focused on the triad of Globalization, Peace, and Justice, advocating for a globalization with a human face and warning of its ambiguous nature, especially in the African context.

She emphasized that, while globalization brings economic opportunities, cultural exchange, and access to global markets, it also imposes challenges that undermine commitment to art, culture, and civilizational values.

To her, peace is a non-negotiable value and must be embraced as an active commitment among nations, with culture and art being unifying elements that bring people closer together.

She concluded by appealing for international cooperation based on fraternity and mutual respect.

In turn, journalist Sandra Mainsel who addressed the theme of “Communication and Peace”, took the opportunity to highlight communication as the essence of life and the main tool for building peace.

She recalled that “everything began with the Word” and argued that the lack or occurrence of communication is at the root of current conflicts, mentioning the scenarios in the countries such as Palestine and Ukraine.

On the other hand, the academic Fernanda da Costa dos Santos de Benedito, Vice-Rector of Academic Affairs at Agostinho Neto University in Angola, highlighted the role of art as a fundamental element for the preservation of peace and cultural diversity.

She emphasized that a large part of artistic expression is born from the word and language, whether native or inherited from colonial processes.

The official advocated for the construction of a “transcultural world” based on peace and transformed by the power of words, knowledge, and education, the latter considered a guarantee of national sovereignty.

The diplomat Sílvia da Cruz reinforced the centrality of the human being in any action for peace, highlighting Angola’s role in protecting and promoting peace, recalling that the country has contributed significantly to stability in Africa and the world.

In turn, diplomat and writer Luzia Oliveira defended the need for understanding between peoples and respect for differences, stating that each act of investiture can be a seed for a more just and united world.

The writer Lenisha Fragoso Baio, who is also a diplomat, highlighted Angola’s commitment to peace, reiterating the country’s continuous efforts in promoting regional and international stability.

The ceremony took place at the Cuenca City Hall, in the Miguel Cervantes Cultural Center.
