The official award of the title to the first Angolan to win this recognized prize is scheduled for August 12th, in Midtown Manhattan, in the United States.
Speaking this Tuesday, Nituecheni Africano, literary pseudonym of Eugénio Afonso Gaspar, said that it was not easy to win the prize, as he had already competed in previous editions, however, he was never accepted due to some of the organization’s criteria.
To this end, he informed that he signed, this year, with the Brazilian publisher Roco, which, in turn, translated the book “O Recluso: O Princípio e o Fim de uma Injustiça” into the English version, which was accepted by FOX, having culminated in the award winning, last Sunday, with more than five thousand votes.
He said it was a hard-fought award, which he won thanks to his determination and persistence, which counted on the votes of Angolans and the Portuguese-speaking community, including family, writers and friends.
The book “The prisoner – the principle and end of an injustice”, with 150 pages, subdivided into 12 chapters, was launched in July 2023, in Portugal, at the headquarters of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) and the Casa of Culture of Angola in Lisbon.
The literary work tells the story of a young lawyer, who is faced with a high-profile case in Angola, where justice seems to obscure the truth.
According to the plot, by demonstrating courage and sagacity during the trial, the protagonist stands out as a defender of human rights, facing issues of abuse of power, influence peddling and money laundering, which reflect contemporary African reality.
The “FOX US2024” literary award is an initiative by the North American cinematography company FOX, held annually in New York City, which aims to distinguish works in the romance genre, with the participation of more than 100 writers from around the world.
