Africa-Press – Angola. The Angolan representation in the “Billie Jean King Cup” tournament, zone Africa group IV, in women’s tennis, started Monday in the worst way its participation in the competition, which is held in Kigali, Rwanda.

In this start of the competition, the players from Academia Kikuxi Villas Club, led by coach João Almeida, were defeated (0-3) by their opponents from Ethiopia, in two singles matches and one doubles match.

On the Angolan side, tennis players Gabriela Martins and Miriam Tuluca played, who lost, in singles, against Eden Zendie and Mekedes Shumat, by equal two sents to zero, respectively.

As for the pairs, the country’s duo was also surpassed by the Ethiopians, who totaled the result of 0-3. In addition to these two, tennis player Mariana Costa is also part of the Angolan team.

Ethiopia, led by coach Hidet Tebekew, also has players Selamawit Ayele Bedada and Sara Kasalhun Kassim.

The Cup, which takes place by continental zones, is a competition on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) calendar.

In the capital of Rwanda, players from 11 African countries are involved, divided into two Pools (A and B), namely Rwanda, Angola, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Congo, Cameroon, Lesotho, Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar and Senegal.

This is the first presence of Angola in this class event.

Remember, about 15 years ago the Angolan team failed to participate in this ITF event.
