Africa-Press – Angola. The vice-president of the Consultative Council of the African Union (AU) against Corruption (AUABC), Pascoal Joaquim, defended, this Wednesday, in Luanda, the launching of premises of sustainable development to save the African continent from corruption.

The magistrate, of Angolan nationality, was speaking at the Regional Conference on Combating Corruption, which brings together member countries of the Community for the Development of Southern Africa (SADC) around anti-corruption priorities.

He emphasized that the phenomenon of corruption, a social evil to be fought vehemently, is identified as one of the causes of the non-development of societies, particularly in Africa.

Understanding the nations and the ghost that is corruption, he underlined that a few decades ago some efforts were made to ensure its prevention and combat.

On the occasion, he defended the implementation of effective policies in the different African States for the prevention and fight against corruption at the most diverse levels, giving a positive note to the holding of the Regional Conference on the fight against this evil.

“As representatives of the AUABC, which is responsible for coordinating and harmonizing policies and legislation among the Member States, with the aim of preventing, detecting and eradicating corruption, we congratulate ourselves on this achievement”.

He said he was hopeful that united and hand in hand African countries could move towards the mitigation of this phenomenon installed by humans.

He recalled that the United Nations and African Union (AU) Convention against corruption highlight international cooperation as one of the primary purposes in the fight against the phenomenon.

The AU convention on combating corruption was adopted on 11 July 2003 in Maputo Mozambique, on the occasion of the second ordinary session of the Assembly of the African Union (for Heads of State and Government).

The Convection entered into force on 5 August 2006, thirty days after the deposit of 15 instruments of ratification.

Pascoal Joaquim made it known that of the 55 countries that make up the African continent, 48 have ratified the document and only seven have not yet done so.

He added that awareness-raising missions were underway with those States and he believed that until the next 11th of July this year, which will be the day of commemoration of the adoption of this convention, the number will be reduced.

Pascoal António Joaquim was elected vice-president of the Advisory Board of the African Union against Corruption (AUABC) in 2021 and reappointed this year 2023, in a session of the Advisory Board of the African Union against Corruption (AUABC).
