Africa-Press – Angola. Defense and security agencies in eastern Lunda Norte have increased their efforts to combat illegal diamond mining in the district through joint micro-operations. This is in response to the growth in the illegal exploitation of this strategic mineral.
Recently, Paulo Tanganha, the national director of Mining Resources, reported that Angola lost six billion US dollars due to illegal diamond mining in 2024. He said that revenues from illegally mined diamonds benefited other economies, such as that of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
To combat this phenomenon, authorities in Lunda Norte have strengthened the presence of defense and security forces in mining areas and dismantled illegal mining sites.
Last weekend, for instance, authorities announced the seizure of 390 diamonds of various carats in the municipalities of Xá Muteba, Lucapa, Dundo, Chitato, and Lóvua. At least 788 DRC citizens were detained for illegally entering and staying in the country, most of whom were involved in illegal diamond mining and fuel smuggling.
