Africa-Press – Angola. The Asian Basketball World Cup trophy is available to the public at the “Bela Shoping” shopping centre, in the municipality of Talatona, Luanda, since the early hours of Monday, for a photo shoot.
Opening from 9 am to 4 pm, the trophy will be handed over at the 19th edition of the Basketball World Championship, to be played from 25 August to 10 September, in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia, in which Angola will take part.
The trophy, which will be shown in 32 countries, will be in Angola until Wednesday (24).
According to the General Secretary of the Angolan Basketball Federation (FAB) and Director of Competitions, Toni Sofrimento, the institution has scheduled several exhibition moments of the Naismith Trophy, in Luanda, with a view to providing lovers of the sport with an opportunity unique opportunity to appreciate this iconic piece up close.
He explained that other activities stand out, such as the presentation to members of civil society and distinguished personalities in a social event to be held in one of the hotels in the capital city.
The trophy will be photographed at the Fortress, Marginal, Slavery Museum and Iron Palace.
Angola’s participation in eight editions of the FIBA Basketball World Championship will be highlighted during the events, showing the country’s pride and history on the international stage.
The NaismithTrophy is a tribute to Dr. James Naismith, the inventor of basketball.
Since 1965, FIBA decided to name the trophy in his honor and the current version, created in 1998, has his name engraved in Latin, Arabic, Chinese characters and Egyptian hieroglyphs, symbolizing the international influence of the sport.
The new version of the trophy is approximately 60 centimeters high, 13 centimeters taller than the previous one. It is made almost entirely of gold and features the names of past World Cup champions engraved on the base.
The original name of FIBA (Federation Internationale de Basketball Amateur) is engraved on the trophy’s rim, highlighting its historical importance.
The trophy has already passed through eight countries, namely the Philippines, Australia, China, New Zealand, Iran, Jordan, Lebanon, Cape Verde and Egypt.
