Africa-Press – Angola. The Belgian ambassador to Angola, Jozef Smets, said, Friday (4), in Luanda, that his country intends to intensify relations with Angola in the most varied areas of cooperation.
The diplomat, who spoke to the press at the end of a meeting with the President of the Republic, stressed that this wish is expressed in a message from the Belgian Prime Minister delivered yesterday to João Lourenço.
“I delivered to the President of the Republic a letter from the Prime Minister of Belgium, Alexander De Croo, which contains a series of messages to intensify contacts with Angola. In the letter, he also refers to the meeting with President João Lourenço, on the sidelines of the COP 26, in Glasgow”, he said, adding that the Prime Minister said that Belgium and Angola have the same priority in the environmental context, climate change and combating the consequences of drought.
Jozef Smets said that he intends with Angola to agree joint positions in multilateral organizations and to coordinate efforts in the environmental context and climate change.
The ambassador said that Alexander De Croo supports Angolan diplomacy and its role in peace and stability in the Great Lakes region: “The government official believes that Angola has a very important role in this process that can benefit us”.
He added that Belgium supports Angola’s role and commitment in resolving conflicts in the region.
During the meeting, the entities also addressed the economic relations between the two countries. At the center of the talks were issues related to the Port, Railway and Diamond sectors. And in this third sector, he stressed, the head of the Belgian Government intends to intensify contacts.
The ambassador said, for example, that in the Port sector, there is cooperation between the ports of Luanda and Antwerp, in Belgium, which aims to build a long-term cooperation relationship.
Smets stressed that the two countries must improve the level of bilateral exchanges.
