Boaventura Cardoso relaunches "May, month of Mary"

Africa-Press – Angola. Twenty-six years later, the Angolan writer Boaventura Cardoso relaunched and autographed, Wednesday, in Luanda, the romance book entitled “May, month of Mary”.

The book has now been edited by Mayamba and prefaced by Luandino Vieira.

Its first edition was published in July 1997, in Porto, Portugal, by Campo das Letras.

With 368 pages, to be sold at a price of eight thousand kwanzas, “May, month of Maria” is a disturbing novel, in which the character João Segunda and his family, assimilated and wealthy Angolans, from the rural interior flee in front of a suspected, but not yet revealed, hurricane, suspended over their heads and riches.

The escape trip will reveal the inevitable and, paradoxically, push them towards the center of that hurricane, Luanda, independence.

At the time, Boaventura Cardoso said that this re-release was encouraged by the publisher, due to the fact that the work was not consumed and disseminated in the country.

He referred to having historically resisted the temptation to rewrite the novel, but not to make small amendments to the form, whose writing process underlies one of the pillars of Bantu culture, which is religion.

He explained that in the book, the spirit of Dona Josefa’s character challenges, advises and encourages João Segunda, making him a puppet, where water is the most present symbol of dualistic semantics that can mean good and evil.

Boaventura Silva Cardoso was born on July 26, 1944, is an Angolan sociologist, diplomat, writer and politician.

He was Minister of Culture on two occasions (1981 to 1990 in the period, secretary with ministerial status) and from 2002 to 2008, as well as Minister of Information (1990 to 1991), Governor of Malanje (2008 to 2012) and first President of the Angolan Academy of Letters (2016 to 2020).
